Hydraulic fracturing (aka "fracking") for shale gas development has become a contentious issue in recent years. People in favor say fracking benefits the economy by creating jobs and ensuring energy security. Opponents say fracking is harmful to the environment because it pollutes groundwater and causes earthquakes. How do we balance the promises and perils of this technology? In this TedX Columbus talk from Novermber 2014, I have tried to provide a balanced, evidence-based understanding of fracking – what it is, why we need it, what are the risks and how they can be managed.
